The popularity of football has grown leaps and bound in the past decade. Football players are being paid millions of dollars to kick the ball around for 90 minutes and more and more controversies are being reported every day. What has always been there about footballers is their hooking up with beautiful models and then breaking up with them to hook up with some other beautiful woman. In 2003, Oliver Kahn leaving his 21 year old girlfriend, Verena Kerth who was pregnant with his child resulted in a national outrage. Oliver Kahn and Verena Kerth were happily dating and the German press had tagged them as Germany’s answer to Beckham and Posh but things went downhill and he left her. It was reported than Kahn’s team mates at Bayern Munich were disgusted at what he did.

The controversy surrounding this is due to Zahia being underage when this act allegedly took place. Zahai turned 18 in 2010 and gave an interview expressing how shocked she was to know that the footballers who treated her with ‘utter respect’ could go to jail over having sex with her when she was underage. Whilst this case is still going on and no verdict has been known, the legal representatives of the footballers have claimed their clients never had sexual intercourse with Zahia.

3. ISRAEL NATIONAL TEAM (1999)

Israel has never been a good football team and isn’t particularly known for their good performance on the field. But, their 5-0 defeat to Denmark in 2000 raised some eyebrows as the investigation behind their heavy defeat began, shocking things were revealed. The Israeli Football Association revealed that players had ordered prostitutes in the hotel rooms on the night they should have ideally taken a rest for the game that was on the next day. Hotel staff found many used condoms in their rooms and it was pretty evident that this was the reason for the players under performing on the field the next day. Even though the names were not revealed, four players were fined and sent home after the incident.
2. TOMMY DOCHERTY (1977)

There’s no job in the world that’s bigger than the managerial job at Manchester United. Tommy Docherty had just won the F.A. Cup with Manchester United and every looked bright until he revealed that he was having an affair with club’s physiotherapist’s wife. She was 18 years younger than Docherty but he claimed it was love that swept him away. United sacked him after the news and it also resulted in the end of a 27 years old marriage with his wife as she divorced him. It is believed that they both are still together, so the love thing may not have been a blatant lie after all.

In January news broke out that John Terry had an affair with then teammate Wayne Bridge’s ex girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel who was also the mother of Bridge’s child. The news didn’t shock many as John Terry is a shady character but it still dominated the headlines for months afterwards. Fabio Capello being England football team coach had to decide whether Terry could continue being the captain of the national team. He was eventually stripped off the captaincy as Wayne Bridge decided to retire from International football. Wayne Bridge refused to shake hands with Terry when the two players’ teams played in the league against each other.
